Can one say

a. She urged engineers, in her recent book, to continue their research in this field.
b. She urged them, in her recent book, to continue their research in this field.

I would certainly put "in her recent book" at the beginning of the sentence. Otherwise, it sounds as if the "engineers" or "them" are in the book itself.
