In greater + 'the name of a place'

I read a " in greater+'the name of a place' " pattern several times in English writings.

For example, 'in greater china', 'in greater East Asia', 'in greater Atlanta', and so on.

but I don't know what it exactly means.

Can someone explain to me?

Thank you in advance.

It means 'in that area and the surrounding area'. For instance, 'greater Los Angeles' is the city of Los Angeles proper plus all the municipalities that surround it.
