In great wrath VS in a great wrath

Hello! I found this sentence in The Lord of the Rings:

The Captain then sent some eastward straight across country

,and he himself with the rest rode along the Road in great wrath.

I was wondering if there is an indefinite or definite article there in "in great wrath",

how it might change the meaning or nuance, compared with no article as in the original sentence.

(and I thought wrath might not possibly be preceded by an indefinite article since it's an emotion?)

Thank you!
