In excess VS to excess

Hi there,

I am having difficulty with the constructs "in excess"/"to excess".

( Ex: To do smth (eat, drink, etc.) to excess or in excess?)

Are they 100% interchangeable?

If they are not, could you please give me a couple of examples illustrating the differences between the two?
