In english I don't think you can "give merit"

How would you say this please?

I tend not to give people enough merit for things they do and you tend to give to much. How can you say to someone
"How can you consider yourself part of a band when all you do is play that thing you call an instrument?"

Thank you

ps
is there anything wrong with "How can you consider yourself part of a band when all you do is play that thing you call an instrument?"
