Can we omit the hyphen in "in depth" in the first sentence? Number 2 is obviously correct.

1. He spoke about the problem in depth.

2. an in-depth analysis

Then in depth can be used as an adverb or an adjective, can't it? (using a hyphen, adjective, not using, an adverb)
