Hello.
I have looked up the meaning of in deference to, and it doesn't seem to fit well in this paragraph, I see a kind of contradiction between activating ... in deference to ... Or maybe this muscle is activated but is still subdued by the other muscles.

Without space between the ribs and pubic bone, the belly muscles pooch out rather than remain hollow, activating the rectus abdominis in deference to transversus abdominis and pelvic floor muscles.

Yes, I think deference is rather unusual in muscles!

As you say, the word activating seems to muddle the meaning. I wonder if the author meant preference.
