In default

http://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2016/02/23/14-malaysians-fined-for-crossing-into-singapore-illegally/

"PONTIAN: A total of 14 locals who entered Singapore without showing their passports at the Bangunan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex were fined.

Sessions court judge Salawati Djambri fined 12 motorcyclists RM1,800 each while two pillion riders were fined RM1,500 in default two months imprisonment after they pleaded guilty. ............."

What does "in default" mean in that sentence? Emotion: thinking

This does not seem like fully correct English to me. It is as if some words and/or some punctuation are missing. My guess is that it means that if they could not pay the fine then they would get two months' imprisonment (or that they couldn't pay the fine and hence did get two months' imprisonment).
