I'd like to hear your opinion on the following sentences.

2. They live in close vicinity to each other.
It seems to me that "IN CLOSE PROXIMITY" is the only correct phrase in this context. However, I found several examples of "IN CLOSE VICINITY" on the web. Thank you for your answers.
