In charge of.../no one hears them....

Hi

There would be house parties and lots of dancing. The supermodels were around. It was striking how much in charge of their own lives these women were. Their power is that no one hears them speak - they're like silent movie stars.

1. When he says "they were in charge of their own lives", does he mean "in control of their own lives" or maybe responsible for their own lives?

2. "no one hears them speak" - is it some metaphor, or maybe they really do not talk to people? They come to the parties and do not talk, hmmm....

thanks
