in back of last year's pace

Is it correct to write "in back of last year's pace"? I think you would be understood but is it correct?

I'm 2 contracts in back of last year's pace. By this time last year, I had 10 contracts. This year I only have 8.

That's not good English. Say 'behind last year's pace'.
