In / around the world

Drought and extreme heat have continued to occur around the world, especially during last year.

Is 'around' OK? Shouldn't it be 'in'?

Thanks.

'around' is ok. Some people might object to your using the present perfect 'have continued' , which emphasizes the fact that it's an ongoing process, and at the same time you're using 'last year' (past time marker). The two don't normally go together.
