What does it mean "in another life" in a sentence like this:

"In another life, maybe I could have been... and would have done..."

Hi, It relates, literally or metaphorically, to the idea of 'reincarnation'. ie You are born, live your life, die, are born again, live another life, die, are born again, etc. You live many lives.

ie You are born, live your life, die, are born again, live another life, die, are born again, etc.

You live many lives.

The writer is posing a hypothetical situation.

It's similar to "If I had it to do all over again, I would do something different." (OR "differently")

"If it were possible to exchange this existence for another one . . . . "

Edit. I agree with Clive's interpretation. I hadn't thought of it that way.

The tenses make it a little ambiguous.
