In and on

I'm confused about the use of prepositions 'in' and 'on'.
from the followings:

1) I write an Excel macro that needs to compare data in column A.
2) I write an Excel macro that needs to compare data on column A.
3) I enter data in column B.
4) I enter data on column B.

which sentences are correct?
and what is the difference between the use of 'in' and 'on' in each pair of sentences, 1) and 2), and 3) and 4) respectively?

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Sarunnio I write an Excel macro that needs to compare data in column A. It sounds incomplete. You compare one thing to another.
