I'd say the phrase to put things in an ironic light (similar to a favourable light, for example) would hardly ever be taken notice of. "Sarcastic light" might follow exactly the same instinct but I've been told it is impossible How would you explain this? Is it because the message is actually carried inside and not outside?
Irony and sarcasm are usually expressed in words, in the form of remarks. It sounds natural to say eg Tom made a sarcastic/ironic remark, but it doesn't sound quite right to say eg Mary put something in a sarcastic/ironic light.
