In an attempt to do something or (while) attempting to do something

- More than 200 people have died in an attempt to reach Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain, since 1920.

Hi:

Would it be natural to say, "... attempting to / while attempting to reach ...", there?

Also, if you have time, please tell me, with an example or two, when to use "-ing" forms of verbs in this way.

Thank you!
