In all Ways That Suddenly Counted

What would you paraphrase the part in red as --- particularly 'suddenly'? Also, could you change the 'is,' right before 'exactly,' to 'was'? Thanks.

Our signatures, in that bold black ink, stood out against the white of the plate's china surface. I could see it from across the room --- I could see all of our names. Janice had displayed the plate in their home as if it were a piece of priceless artwork, which, in all ways that suddenly counted, is exactly what it was. Top answer

'Suddenly' evidently indicates the speaker's sudden realization that it was indeed a piece of artwork. 'All ways' means the various terms by which the autogrraphed plate could be considered art.
