In all the previous matches we had been playing excellently that season!

Hello all.

My teacher gave a senetnce where ven she started to doubt whteher a native speaker would ever say it.

Here is the sentence:

We were so dissapointed when our game was interrupted. In all the previous matches we had been playing excellently that season!

Or only "we had played" is correct?

  • Anonymous We were so disappointed when our game was interrupted.
  • In all the previous matches we had been playing excellently that season!
  • Or only "we had played" is correct?
  • Both verb forms are fine and synonymous there.
  • The continuous just shows a bit more emotion from the speaker, with a bit more hope that they will continue to play well.
