In all of sport?

I heard a sports announcer say, 'He was the greatest athlete in all of sport.' Wouldn't it be, 'In all of sports'?

Is 'sport', in this context, acceptable usage?

PS: In Br. style, does the comma fall outside the single quote as I did above?
