In advance v.s beforehand

Are these two expressions ALWAYS interchangeable under all circumstances?
Thanks in advance(or can I say Thanks beforehand?)!

I think you are right that "in advance" works for "beforehand", but not always the other way round.
I have often seen "Payment in advance is required" but not "Payment beforehand is required".
Just my own thought here: I myself would be more likely to use "in advance" for single actions, for example "We should buy our tickets in advance, in case they sell out." I would be more likely to us
