in addition to

Hi,

Are 'plus', 'besides', 'in addition to' and 'as well as' all interchangeable in the following examples? If not, what is their subtle difference?

1.Do you play any other sports besides/plus/in addition to/as well as football and basketball?

2.People choose jobs for other reasons besides/plus/in addition to/as well as money.

3.Do you have any other reasons why you want to quit the job besides/plus/in addtion to/as well as the low pay?
Yes, besides/plus/in addition to/as well as the low pay, it is a very boring job.

4.In addition to/Besides/Plus/As well as being a pianist, she is also a painter.

5.She is also a painter as well as be a pianist.
Is 'be' also correct here? I have ever seen some people use in this way.

As far as I know, 'besides' and 'plus' are used in spoken Egnlish. How about 'in addition to' and 'as well as'? Could we use them in writing and spoken English? are they formal or informal?

Thank you very much.

1. Do you play any other sports besides/plus/in addition to/as well as football and basketball?

besides ] fine; though "other" may seem redundant to some

plus ] no, not used like that

in addition to ] sounds a little odd in conjunction with "other sports", to me

Plus isn't really appropriate in any of your examples. It doesn't really mean 'add more information'.

Try substituting the phrases 'added to' or 'and also' in your sentences and you will see why it doesn't quite work.
