Does it mean that Hegar sang a very powerful song and at the same time a piece of music was played?

What does lose one's wit mean in the following?

Hugo drank a cup of poison,( He was not aware of the poison.) he lost his wit and after a great deal of clutching and stamping, fell flat and died.

And how about this one?

The pair were kneeling to receive Don Pedro's blessing in attitudes of the most romantic grace.

Does it mean that the most romantic prayer or blessing?
