In a small way/blue veined/sliced in to a stand

Hi

The action takes place on a bus: In the seat behind the boy sat an old lady in a parchment dress. When she leaned forward to ask a question, the boy shook his head in a small way and answered with care. His words rose like smoke, and the lady settled back, blue-veined fingers on the chain that held her spectacles. She looked through the window and her lenses flashed, then went dark as the road sliced into a stand of pine with shadows that pooled green beneath the limbs. The same light filled the bus, and the driver studied the man in the wrinkled suit.

--- Does "in a small way" mean "gently"?

--- I understand that she had fingers with visible veins on them and she held her chain with spectacles?

--- It sounds like the bus turned into the road where there were many pine trees and they cast a shadow on the road, however I'm not sure about the part "that pooled green beneath the limbs". I don't get the meaning.

Hi

You wrote "the road looked like a knife had sliced through the trees".

Does it mean they kept driving until suddenly the found themselves on the road (they sliced into the road) where on both sides there were many pine trees? Hence those shadows?

More or less. It is the road that is like the knife, ie it is the road that does the slicing. They arrived at the part
