In a second time or in the second time?

I have come across the following English sentence:

"John came in a second time, flying about 500 feet over a farm near the village of Berg,..."

I believe "John came in the second time" is also possible.

If so, then what is the difference?

Thank you very much!

You would use the when you are giving more information. When he flew in the second time, he really frightened his neighbors. By the third time, they were fine.
