In a place that is near (paraphrase for 'outside'?

Hi teachers,
Would 'in a place that is near; at the exterior of' be appropriate paraphrases for 'outside' in the following sentence?
There's also one toilet outside the house.

Outhouses were usually erected at some distance from the main living quarters (for obvious reasons).
I would say "not far from" rather than "near."
