"I saw a kitten by the side of the road. I tried to rescue it, but when I got within a few feet of it, it ran away."

I saw a kitten at the curb, and I approached it, but when I got just a few feet from it, it started running away.

"in distance" is OK, but it's almost never necessary after a measurement of distance. For example, 'in distance' in sentence 2 adds nothing to the meaning of sentence 1.
