Vocabulary

impression

Dear teachers,

Would you please tell me what" impression" mean here? Does it mean "opinion"?

In the TV show(how I met your mother)

Ted notices that his tastes are changing overnight. His tastes in his shirt, bourbon etc..
  • Soon after Ted drinks a sip of bourbon, he says: I seem to like bourbon now. I could've sworn I hated bourbon. First the shirt, now the bourbon. I spent 27 years making up my mind about things, right? The movie I saw once and hated, the city I'll never go back cause it was raining the day I visited. Maybe it's time to start forming some second "impressions".
Thanks a lot in advance.

Thanks CalifJim,
Is it different from opinion ?
For example here they both are used in the same context.

Language is a means to communicate ideas and impressions, its development influenced by the environment, by physiological and psychological traits.

I assume "it" is 'impression'. Yes. 'impression' is different from 'opinion'. Otherwise, we wouldn't have two different words for them. There really aren't any two words that mean exactlythe same thing, but sometimes there are two words that are close enough in meaning w

Oops, I'm terribly sorry. Maybe it's because of the coffee again. Lol
I mean the difference between "idea" and " impression"
In dictionaries, it seems their definitions are similar.

Ideas are purely mental. They are thoughts. You can have ideas without actually looking at anything or listening to anything or doing anything. Impressions involve the feelings you get from seeing and hearing things.
