I had been, quite often, the victim of defaulted and heated auto- fare meters. For taking me from the Central Station to Egmore, the distance being less than 2km, an auto- driver had once fleeced me for a hefty amount. Then, the trickster, to justify the fare he’d demanded, went around places, took me through remote streets and alleys, made several ‘u’ turns and detours before dropping me at my destination. Impolite behaviors, demanding exorbitant fares from the gullible passengers even for short distance trips, badmouthing them during journeys, reckless driving and above all abject violations of traffic rules were always synonymous with some disgruntled auto-drivers.
