Implicit object?

Hi. Is this correct? Is the part "modern theories" implicit after the verb "learn"? Also. should there be the definite article "the" in the place, in parentheses? I hope my questions are clear. Let's say this example sentence gives a very general idea as to what students in a certain school course do. Thank you in advance for your help.

Students learn and conduct research on (the) modern scientific theories.
