As I was watching a lecture, I heard a sentence similar to this one:
"It is the driver's responsibility to keep his or her car documents within the vehicle..."
Is it possible to express this impersonal idea of possession, or any impersonal idea, without having to use both pronouns in a sentence?
As a native portuguese speaker, I've always been used to employing the masculine possessive to express this generic idea of impersonality,as it can be seen in:
"It is the driver's responsibility to keep his car documents within the vehicle..."
Is the first usage just a matter of general equality or is it really a characteristic of the language?
