Imperative: to know

Is it possible to use the verb "to know" in an imperative construction?

Top answer

It's possible, but you won't see it used as an imperative terribly often. One example that comes immediately to mind is this idiomatic expression: - Know thyself. You might also hear something like this: - Know what needs to be done first; then you can worry about how to do it.

Also: "Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you".

"Just know that the police are watching every step you take."

I think it could be used just about any place that you want to emphasize be aware (not beware).

Hi,
From Obama'a inaugural speech.

To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West - know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy.
