Immigration and emigration

Hi

Do IMMIGRATION and EMIGRATION carry the same meaning?

From Merriam-Webster Dictionary:

emigrate:

to leave one's place of residence or country to live elsewhere <emigrated from Canada to the United States>

Immigrate:

to come into a country of which one is not a native for permanent residence

Aren't they the same thing?

Actually, no, they are not. To emigrate is to leave a country, esp. one’s own, intending to remain away. To immigrate is to enter a country, intending to remain there.

My aunt emigrated=leave from Poland and immigrated=come to Canada.
