Immediate rewards or long-term rewards for ESL learning?

I kind of feel stuck at this question and cant find out the clue.

Will the students benefit more from immediate rewards or long-term rewards in ESL learning?

For me, they are both important. But I think immediate rewards are very crucial at the beginning, since the students get motivated when they get positive feedback as well as rewards. While long-term rewards are for those who are aware what they are gonna achieve after hardworking in the future?

What do you think?
