imagine

I say something crazy happened to me the other day. And My friend says:

I could imagine. Or

I can imagine.

Is there a difference between the two utterances?

The person answered it incorrectly, so I posted it again.

I can imagine implies that she is mentally picturing the event as you speak (even if she isn't literally doing so). I could imagine would be fine if she were describing the conversation afterwards, (When PreciousJones told me about it I could imagine the scene...) but it would sound odd if she said it to you now. (I could imagine (if I wanted to)).
