I'm up to my asterisk.........?

"I'm up to my asterisk in political quicksand."

This is a line in a TV series, the Mentalist(season 2, episode 3),

and I want to know what it means.

The situation is this :

There are two police officers. (Let's just say they're A and B)

One day B's fingerprints are found on a murder weapon, so she becomes the suspect.

Of course A, her boss, is in big trouble and says to A "I'm up to my asterisk in political quicksand."

Thank you in advance.
