Should I use subjunctive form 'were' in the following setnence?
I'm sure you would have done the same to help me if it were/was you in my place.

Recently, I read somewhere that 'was' is gradually taking place of 'were' as a subjunctive form. Is there any truth to it? Please let me know.

There is some truth to it. Yes. Nevertheless, careful speakers and writers continue to use "were".
