I'm reading Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and i brought here an excerpt from the book for to have it rephrased to aid my understanding.

Hello. I am reading Fahrenheit 451. I guess it's famous enough that I don't have to add any minor details to know what it is.
While reading it I came across this following sentence, which I found rather hard to break it down into right components:

What a strange meeting on a strange night. He remembered nothing like it save one afternoon a year ago when he had met an old man in the park. ....

Above I can see that "remembered" is functioning as a verb in past tense, then there "save" follows. For some reason I cannot make any sense out of this particular sentence. Could anyone help?

Hi, He remembered nothing like it save one afternoon a year ago when he had met an old man in the park. He remembered nothing like it except one afternoon a year ago when he had met an old man in the park. ...

  • Hi, He remembered nothing like it save one afternoon a year ago when he had met an old man in the park.
  • He remembered nothing like it except one afternoon a year ago when he had met an old man in the park.
  • ...
  • A simpler example - Everyone came to the party save Mary.
