I'm looking for a verb

Hi,

Is there a single verb in English to mean "get a lesson from an event."

Thanks!

Please give an example of the "event" you are talking about. John learned not to drive 100 km/hour on the winding, narrow road. Joan realized that she should have looked at the weather report before going out without a coat.

I mean a bad event, for example if you fail your test because you have not enough studied or when you have an accident because you have not observed the traffic law...

From the exmples you gave, I think I should use "learn".

Thank you!
