I'm having doutbs about

Hello, everyone.

While doing listening drills, I met the following question. Would you take a look?

A : I'm having doubts about investing in property.
B : .......

1. You should trust your instincts.
2. But you've spent so much on it.

There were two more options, but they did not make any sense. But those of two written above are ambiguous to me. The answer sheet pointed option 2 as the right answer.

Why is option 1 unnatural? And If option 1 is the right answer, I believe it means the speaker A's sentence may includes somthing to imply the fact that the speaker A has been investing in property. Is the progressive tense of 'having doubs' related to it?

Many thanks in advance

I would say that B could say either one, but I would have thought #1 was more likely. It is possible that A has been investing in property and is now wondering if he made a mistake, or thinking he should start investing in something else now. In this case either option is possible, but #1 seems more likely.

  • In this case either option is possible, but #1 seems more likely.
  • As far as #2 is concerned, the fact that he has invested a lot already is no reason to continue to do so if it is not the best course of action.
  • If A has not yet invested, but has been seriously thinking about it, then only #1 makes sense.
