It is not possible to say that:
I am dropping golf club and I am gonna punch you.

Why would it be impossible for one guy to drop his club and begin to hit the other with his fists?
A fist is much more precise than a golf club.
But - hey - it's an idiomatic expression and I'm sure you'll know how to use it correctly when you need to.
