I'm going to fish VS I'm going fishing

Hi,
I'm helping a boy woth his English homeworks and yesterday I found myself in this very puzzling situation. He is studying the future forms and so I asked the boy what he was going to do tomorrow, and he said: I'm going to fish. Very instinctively, I corrected him by saying "I'm going fishing" but now I'm not sure anymore, and keep on wondering which of the two is preferable and why.
Can anybody help me to solving this doubt?
Thanks a lot!
Sandra

Anonymous I asked the boy what he was going to do tomorrow, and he said I'm going to fish. That’s fine, but I find your version more natural.
