Grammar

I'm doing vs I've been doing.

So if I am talking about the fact that I've been doing bodyweight workouts is it okay to say the following?:

''Since covid hit in march 2020 I quit going to the gym, so now I'm just doing bodyweight workouts instead of gym workouts .''

or is the only correct way: ''Since covid hit in march 2020 I quit going to the gym, I've been doing bodyweight workouts instead of gym workouts ''

I feel like the first one is still okay, especially if it's said to American. They are a bit lax with grammar. Thanks!

" In addition to the marked corrections, "Since Covid hit ... I quit going" is problematic. "quit going" is a discrete event that happens at one point in time, not a continuing state of affairs.
