I'm confused

I wish chocolate......... so fattening then I........ a box of chocolates every day.

A) hadn't been/were eating
B) weren't / would eat

Which one is correct and why can you help me?

Top answer

You have in effect a hypothetical condition about the present: If chocolate weren't so fattening, then I would eat ... The past subjunctive were is used for a present(or future) counterfactual condition, and would is used for a present (or future) consequence of such a condition.
