I'm at a bit of a loss as to how best to improve your description...

Hi

Could you please tell me about the use of "best" in this sentence.

I'm at a bit of a loss as to how best to improve your explanation.

It's an adverb modifying to improve . I believe the structure is used by those who like to avoid splitting an infinitive (how to best improve) or putting the modfier too near the end of the sentence (how to improve your explanation best).

I agree with most of what Philip wrote, however I feel quite sure that I would have no problem using a wording such as "how best to improve" without a single thought running through my head about not wanting to split an infinitive. For me personally, it simply sounds better than "how to best improve".
