THE DAY A LIFE ENDED

When the huge creature leapt in front of me, I couldn’t help but freeze. Yes, this was the same creature that my friend, Jack, had gone in search of a couple of hours ago. He never returned. I wished that he had conquered the mighty creature which is known among natives of the Himalayas as Chewbacca, or as Bigfoot by westerners. It is said that he inhabits the snowy, foggy mountains of the Himalayas and that he eats those who find themselves in his path; global warming has forced it to develop a taste for human blood because its natural habitat—along with its sources of food—is being damaged by human activity.

Here I am now standing right in front of this fierce monstrosity. I have to say it was not as tall as I expected -- it was only about seven feet tall. However, its height did nothing to diminish its gross fearsomeness; it had red bloodshot eyes, a sinister grin which exhibited its razor sharp teeth. It was covered in white grassy fur from its lanky arms to its large feet and gave off a very pungent odour.

I knew that there was no escape because it had cornered me at the edge of a cliff and with his superior animal instinct he could still track me down if I miraculously managed to escape. I just stood there and waited for him to pounce but he didn’t; he stood there and as if to admire me and while at that moment I entertained the vague thought that jack might still be alive, I heard its rather guttural voice breathe the word “death.” What did this mean? Could it have read my mind and knew that I was thinking about Jack? It suddenly dawned on me that this creature is more sentient than I had imagined. Of course trigger happy Jack would have gone in guns blazing and would have met his certain death in the hands of this creature.

I thought to myself that it had better devour me quickly before my sour attitude -- due to the fact that I was basically being held ransom by an overgrown ape -- began to affect the taste of my flesh in its mouth. Unexpectedly, it simply turned around and ambled as if realising that I posed no threat to him; I was just an average “Joe.”

Before that moment, that realisation would have made me feel inconsequential but now I was glad because it saved my life. I only felt despair at the thought I could not save the life of my friend, Jack, and I wondered what I would tell his wife and child who would have been waiting anxiously for his return. I knew that it would be an experience that would haunt me for the rest of my life and that I would never return to the Himalayas again.
