I felt they weren't in the same category. I wanted to see if native speakers would accept illnesses in such a case. What would be a better choice? Diseases? (Even worse to my ear) Conditions?

Hi,
Perhaps 'conditions'. We don't think of fever or the flu as a disease.

But if you name the fever, eg dengue fever, now it certainly is a disease.

Best wishes, Clive

Thanks, Clive. I'll probably create another thread to distinguish disease from conditions.
