Ill-loved

Hello,

Could you, please, explain to me the meaning of the word "ill-loved" in the below mentioned sentence. I have found a couple of words beginning with "ill-" in dictionaries, but not "ill-loved":

Sooner or later the muddy path led me to that ill-loved stream and finally persuaded me through a stand of bright red trees.

Thank you very much.

This is a poetic way of speaking. "Ill-loved" is the opposite of "well-loved." It means a "badly loved" or "unloved."
