I'll admit sadness and a certain surprise

From Barack Obama's eulogy at John McCain's funeral:

"Now, when John called me with that request earlier this year, I'll admit sadness and also a certain surprise."
("That request" refers to one Mr. McCain made for Mr. Obama to deliver a speech at his funeral.)

Obviously this conversation happened in the past. Mr. Obama felt sad and surprised when the telephone conversation took place. What does "will" in "I'll admit" mean, then?
