if...then

What's the verdict on if...then statements? When I say this, I'm wondering if the 'then' is neseccary in formal writing, and is it ever wrong? Is there any situations in which you would not use 'then'?

Some examples: If I stay out late, I will sleep it. If the weather permits, I will swim in the ocean.

then is completely optional in all if -sentence contexts. I hardly ever use it myself. I'd guess that most people don't use then in the consequent clause.
