Vocabulary

if+past+then+present

I have some problem with the usage of "if" in this form: if+past+then+present in the following context below. Having said that do the first couple of sentences of the context mean

"Although art-makers may have been thought special in some areas (maybe because of their excellent technical draughtsmanship or bone-carving skills), it was their mediation between the real and the imagined other world that resulted in their acquiring shamanistic status"?

Context:

If art-makers were in any way special – and they may simply have possessed excellent technical draughtsmanship or bone-carving skills to start with – then their apparent mediation between the real and the imagined other world seems to have resulted in their acquiring shamanistic status, instrumental in devising ritualistic depiction and ceremonies, which became more elaborate and codified as time went on.
